Heroclix Starters 2026
Heroclix will be celebrating its silver anniversary in 2027 and it's come a long way over the past two decades. Powers, abilities and traits have become increasingly sophisticated, the quality of sculpts has continued to impress, and more IPs have joined the range. Still tho', the overwhelming majority of Heroclix releases have been in the DC and Marvel universes, and the core game still involves arena beat-em-up contests between competing teams of characters. We recently featured the Heroclix Iconix Power Rangers set on Board's Eye View. We loved the new Power Rangers miniatures but we bemoaned the fact that the package didn't lend itself well for use to anyone coming new to Heroclix. Happily, WizKids have this covered with the 2026 Marvel and DC Starter Sets.
Both these Starter Sets offer an accessible entry point to anyone coming fresh to Heroclix or who, like some of the members of the Board's Eye View team, are lapsed enthusiasts. Each of the Starter Sets includes four pre-painted Heroclix superhero figures, character cards, terrain and other markers, a double-sided player mat, dice and the all-important rulebook and powers guide so that anyone buying the box can be immediately up and running.
The Marvel Starter Set features the X-Men, with impressive sculpts of Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Bishop. The six-sided dice show the X-Men logo in place of the 6. In the DC Starter Set, there are brand new action sculpts of Batman, Supergirl, Flash (Barry Allen) and Green Lantern (John Stewart). The dice have the Batman logo in place of the 6. Tokens represent bad guys to fight (Marvel's Sentinel and DC's Darkseid), which should tide players over until they stock up with more Heroclix figures to fight; or of course you can pit heroes against each other provided you put together teams with similar points values. For the Starter Sets, WizKids have supplied alternative cards for each miniature, varying the abilities depending on whether you play a hero for their 50 point or 75 point value.
It's not just those coming new or as recent returnees to Heroclix that will find these Starter Sets appealing. Collectors will already have other versions of these superheroes but these new sculpts are among the most dynamic we've seen.
Hovering in the background in our 360º are the sculpts from the new Iconix 'Giant Size X-Men' box. Colossus aside, these aren't oversized superheroes or extra-large sculpts but the characters who appeared in Giant Size X-Men #1 comic in 1973: Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Colossus and Thunderbird. Like other sets in the Iconix series it's being marketed as much as a display piece as for the play value of the sculpts and Heroclix dials.
There's yet another version of Wolverine, along with a strikingly different Storm, Jubilee and Forge in the X-Men '97 Heroclix 400 box. Look out also for the Heroclix 400 Hell's Kitchen Heroes featuring Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. The boxes in the Heroclix 400 series are so named because the figures in each box have a combined value of 400 points for use when building your team of heroes or villains. Even if you might quibble over the relative points values given to some of the characters, it's great to see that under WizKids' stewardship, Heroclix continues to thrive and expand.
