This looks so good in its comicbook-format box that many Heroclix collectors will be torn over whether to display the X-Men figures individually or to keep them in the hinged display box. If you keep them in the box, you just need to tug on the front to pull the velcro connectors apart to view the six figures inside.

WizKids' Iconix series is designed to give us sculpts that celebrate iconic images and moments mainly but not exclusively from the Marvel and DC universes. We've seen X-Men before among Marvel Heroclix releases but this Iconix box gives us the X-Men as they appeared in the very first issue of the X-Men comic in 1963. The box art faithfully reproduces the X-Men #1 cover, and the sculpts for each of the figures reproduce the poses of each character on that iconic comicbook cover.

It means we get some great action poses from the original X-Men team of Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman and Jean Grey, and a great sculpt of their foe, the supervillain Magneto. All, of course, are pre-painted minis, and the X-Men team are all in their original costumes. But unlike many other releases in the Iconix range, these Heroclix figures are not just designed with display in mind - X-Men First Appearance makes for a playable contest straight out of the box, pitting a team of original X-Men (75 points each) against the very powerful Magneto (295 points).
The X-Men Heroclix figures play very much as a team: each, for example, has the ability as a a free action to heal by one click an adjacent friendly character. It's an ability you'll certainly need to draw on to have any chance of success in taking down Magneto, whose telekinetic powers can disintegrate blocking terrain and use it to inflict triple damage on his enemies.
This Iconix release scores with us on every level. We can't wait now to see what other gems WizKids come up with in this great display & play series.
