Smash and Destroy / Heroclix 400

Smash and Destroy isn't just the title of this, the latest release in WizKids ever-expanding Marvel Heroclix universe, it also sums up many of the Heroclix figures in this set as well as the strategy and tactics of play. There are other Marvel characters represented, including several from Asgard, but a great many of the figures in this set are especially renowned as heavy hitters - quite literally - including Juggernaut, Goliath, Destroyer and, of course, Hulk. Heroclix Smash and Destroy figures are packaged in a sealed 'booster pack' containing five figures; you won't know which figures are in each pack until you open it but you can expect that it will include one rare, super-rare or ultra-rare figure.

Smash and Destroy incorporates multiple versions of several of the characters, so, for example, you can swap out your 'Hulk is Bigger!' version in favour of 'Hulk is Stronger!' and even an iteration 'Hulk Strongest One There Is!'. There are some alternative sculpt Hulks too, including one with Hulk punching through a wall, similar to the illustration on the booster pack. Each version of Hulk has different stats on their respective Heroclix dials and accompanying cards, tho' you can rest assured that every Hulk will Smash! The set includes no less than seven different iterations of Absorbing Man!

As we've increasingly come to expect from WizKids, Smash and Destroy includes some great Heroclix sculpts and, as usual, all come pre-painted, albeit that there are several figures in this set that are essentially monochrome; for example, the giant Sandman and the translucent Zzzax. Heavy hitting characters typically like to chuck terrain about, and several of the packs in this set include a terrain item and accompanying card in addition to the pack's five figures.

In addition to buying individual packs, you can buy Heroclix Smash and Destroy by the 'brick', which is a block of 12 packs. Buying packs bundled together in a 'brick' doesn't alter the possibility that you might still pick up duplicates; the more packs you open, the more chance you have that at least one of the figures in the pack will be a duplicate of one you pulled earlier, but buying a brick does give you the added bonus of a Legacy Card... As Heroclix has continued to develop, some older figures have been effectively sidelined, often for being relatively underpowered in comparison with more recent releases or being saddled with what now seems like an excessive points value. WizKids have been addressing this with the issue of Legacy Cards that can be used with earlier release figures.

Versions of some of the same Marvel characters are also being sold in a new Heroclix 400 pack: Cap's Kooky Quartet. Heroclix 400 are ready-to-play 400-point teams, also playable in 300-point tournaments, where you know eactly what characters you're getting; in this case, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and Quicksilver. The sculpts are the same as those you'll find in the booster packs but they are versions with different stats on their Heroclix dials.

Heroclix Smash and Destroy and the Heroclix 400 packs are already on sale in the USA and are expected to hit retail shelves in UK and Europe very shortly.
