Shapes

Published by Singa Games, Shapes is a simple card game designed by Naia Hamasaki as an educational game for pre-school children reinforcing colour and shape recognition, and introducing them to basic card game play. Like STOP, which we featured earlier this year on Board's Eye View, Shapes comes packed in a resealable pouch.

The game comprises a deck of 36 cards: six different shapes in six different colours, including one card that invites children to colour it in. We're not sure we want to encourage toddlers to practise their colouring-in skills on board game components so we prefer to simply treat these cards as white. The 2-6 players are each dealt a hand of three cards and the top card of the deck is turned over to start the discard pile. Player have to play to the discard pile in turn a card that matches either the colour or shape of the card on top. If you don't have a match, you instead draw a card. The winner is the first player to exhaust their hand.

It's a super easy game that young children can enjoy playing, including with other members of the family. And if the cards help you pick up a few words of Spanish then that's a bonus.
