Quirky

Quirky is a party game that lives up to its name. Designed by David Williams and published by Cheatwell Games, it's a game for any number of players: you'll need at least three but the only upper limit is the time taken for everyone to get the same number of turns answering questions.

It's a quiz game but with mostly quirky questions: four on each of the 288 cards. A few questions have single specific answers but others are subjective or open enough to invite a variety of plausible answers. When it's your turn to be the answerer, you'll roll a custom eight-sided die (1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4) to determine the question number you'll be asked on each card. The questioner (the player to your right) flips the '40 second' sand timer and you try to get through as many cards as you can in the time with answers to the questions of the number you rolled. Your answers don't have to be right: they just have to be plausible enough not to invite a challenge from another player. You win all the cards you answer but if a player challenges a card, it's put aside until the end of your '40 second' run.

To resolve challenges, the player who challenges an answer has to justify their challenge. If the answerer and challenger can't agree, the other players vote on whether or not the challenge is correct. Correct challenges win the card plus another from the answerer. The answerer gets the card if the challenge is incorrect and they take an additional card from the challenger (or from the supply if the challenger has no cards). Just be warned, there are no answers on any of the cards.

That's really all there is to the game but it's made entertaining by the eclectic mix of questions and the great opportunities for bluffing. In our plays at Board's Eye View, we found that it was invariably best to sound authoritative when answers were complete guesses. Dithering tends to invite challenges, tho' that too can be a viable strategy if it draws a challenge that turns out to be unsuccessful...
