Oopsie

Oopsie proved a hit at this year's Spiel Essen. If you're looking for a zany but fun party game to play over the holiday season, it's a card game from Norwegian publisher Oopsie AS that should fit the bill. The game is designed by Carina Hegreberg.

On your turn, you draw a card and read it out. It sets out a rule that you need to follow. You'd better concentrate on what you read, however, because you don't get to look at the card again: you have to place it in a rack so that it faces away from you. That means all the other players can see the rules you have to follow, and of course you can see theirs, but none of the players can see their own rules once they've read them out.
At the start of the game it's easy enough to remember one and then two rules but as the number of rules increases so does the likelihood of error or omission. As you might guess from the name of the game, you're on the lookout for other players' slip ups. When you notice one you call out 'Oopsie' and it wins you their card, which counts as a point.
Oopsie takes 2-8 players and, from our plays at Board's Eye View, we'd rate it as being at its best with at least four players. It generates much hilarity and it becomes all the more chaotic at higher player counts with everyone vying to be the first to spot another player's error so that they get to nab the card. This is one of party games we'll be playing with the family this Christmas. And, unlike many other party games, Oopsie doesn't come with a NSFW (Not Safe For Work) warning, so it shouldn't trouble your HR Department if you break it out at an office party.
