Miniature Adventures

With its pixel-style artwork from Nathaniel Murphy and designer Jon Lowman, LowTek Games' Miniature Adventures harks back to the early days of video role-playing games. It's a card-driven fantasy-themed game where one or more heroes are on a quest which involves battling goblins et al.

The monsters you encounter in Miniature Adventures are scaleable based on player count. This is a game that can be played cooperatively with up to four players but it is also playable solo. It lends itself particularly well to solitaire play, and its compact box and the reasonably modest space it takes up on the table make it a good candidate to pack with you on your travels and real-world adventures: at a push, you could probably play this game on an airline pull-down tray table. Just beware, all the marker tokens in the game are double-sided and, annoyingly, they are different on each side.

To play, players take a hero card and pair it with one or two cards representing classes. It's these that facilitate levelling up as you make your way through an adventure that takes place across four locations: in order, the Misty Forest, Mountain Path, Goblin Fortress and Goblin Throne. Heroes roll three standard six-sided dice and these are allocated as 'adventure points' to determine initiative, power basic actions and power up unique 'special actions'. In our plays at Board's Eye View we mostly found we were allocating our highest die roll to action points (ie: mainly to power basic actions).

A few unlucky dice rolls can set you back, especially if your hero is inflicted with one or more conditions causing attrition (poison, bleed and/or burn) but on your first and second Knock Outs (KO) you just pick yourself up and dust yourself down. It's your third KO that spells defeat; only then, you'll have to start over with a new hero...
