Emerald Echoes

Designed by Rita Orlov and Chelsea Stark, Emerald Echoes is an 'escape room' style puzzle game from PostCurious. It's a standalone sequel to PostCurious' 2021 game Emerald Flame; you don't need to have played the earlier game to play this one.

There's a framing narrative to the game of two researchers examining Medieval documents, with four 'chapters' where you need to piece together the puzzles in order to uncover the story being told in the Medieval manuscripts. It's a game that comes with no 'rules': you just open up the first of the four sealed envelopes and solve in order the numbered puzzles therein. The game can be played solitaire but it shines as a cooperative game for a handful of players bouncing ideas off each other to solve the various codes and puzzles.

We're anxious to avoid giving away any Spoilers. Suffice to say the game eases players in with an incremental approach to the puzzling, heightening players' interest through the engaging story that emerges from the notes and correspondence in the manuscripts. The puzzles themselves aren't overly difficult, tho' it can be fiddly actually transcribing some of the codes. There are clues available at every stage, and you can always check your answers before moving on.

Emerald Echoes is attractively presented, with art by Jack Fallows, Liiga Klavina and Rita Orlov. You can expect to polish off a 'chapter' in an evening's play; so Emerald Echoes should give you four light games nights' worth. There's no destruction of any of the contents - the ersatz Medieval documents are treated with appropriate respect - which means that when you complete the game you can reset it and pass it on for others to play.
