Deadly Death

Originally published by Atomo as El Mortal, GDM have republished the game as Deadly Death with English rules to bring it to a wider audience. It's a light, tongue-in-cheek, card game where the 3–6 players are trying to avoid collecting death cards: collect three and you're out of the game, with the win going to the player with the fewest death cards.

Players are all dealt starting hands of three cards and the remaining deck is seeded so that there is a death card placed after every six cards (five cards in a six-player game). On your turn you must play at least one card and draw cards so that you have a hand of at least three cards. You need to try to avoid picking up a death card, so you'll want to keep track of how many cards have been drawn since the last death card. That information should inform the card(s) you play...

As you might guess, the cards mostly manipulate hands or turn order, and it's the hand management and turn manipulation that generates the hilarity and excitement of the game. I might deliberately play cards to set up the next player so that a death card is left at the top of the draw pile but then I'm forced to trigger my own trap by my neighbour playing a card that reverses the turn order!

Deadly Death is designed by Victor Manuel Hernández Román, with art by Jonathan Canamero. It makes for a silly but nonetheless fun filler-length game that plays in around 20 minutes, and it's at its interactive best with five or six players.
