In Horrible Therapist (Exploding Kittens) players were constructing comic strips with the therapist contributing mostly offensive punchlines in the final frame. In this follow-up game, the therapist has, it seems, got their just desserts. Tho' it shares the look of Horrible Therapist, Dead Therapist is a standalone game and it's quite different to its predecessor.
Whereas Horrible Therapist was a (NSFW) pitching game, Dead Therapist takes the form of a murder mystery-themed puzzle-solving game. It's a game with an unfolding storyline that emerges as you solve puzzles. Players are under strict instructions not to shuffle the deck, and you proceed by flipping cards until you reach the next puzzle.
It's a game that can be played solo but Dead Therapist is at its best as a two- or three-player cooperative game with players discussing the puzzles and bouncing ideas and suggestions off each other. You'll probably get stuck along the way but the team at The Oatmeal and Exploding Kittens have you covered with a deck of clue cards. The game also comes with sealed envelopes that you must only open when instructed to do so.
As always when featuring murder mystery or escape room games, we've tried to avoid giving away any spoilers; our Board's Eye View 360 only shows the first puzzle card and the run of introductory cards that lead to it. Suffice to say, however, the tone of Dead Therapist is as you might have come to expect from Exploding Kittens: it's based on dark humour that some will certainly find offensive. Just note that the publishers have given the game a '17+' age rating...
