Wow! Just wow! Everything here works perfectly: setup and teardown time of 10 seconds (counted), an optimal 45-minute playtime per boss, a 10-boss campaign which is exactly the perfect campaign length (no need to sign a long-term contract like in Cephalofair's Gloomhaven), an app that works so beautifully you feel like applauding it, ten super cool bosses that are completely different from one another, and the best and most varied AI I’ve seen in a board game.
This is the advantage of an app that runs the boss: buttery-smooth gameplay thanks to the combination of app and QR, strong and fun player synergy, character progression that’s a joy and hasn’t been seen since Adventure Tactics (Letiman Games), top-tier production quality and design, and simply a perfect game to play with a kid as well (my 14-year-old declared it the best board game he’s ever played. And he’s played a ton).
The game feels like the love child of Dice Throne (Roxley) and Slay the Spire (Contention Games). It's slick like the first but actually requires thinking (Dice Throne is a bit dumb, let’s be honest. And when I say a bit, I mean completely), and not a masterpiece like the second, but it’s not trying to be one either — it’s just pure fun. The game has four races and four classes that you combine into a single character, which allows for some replayability (we’ll run it again with the races and classes we didn’t choose), and Pegasus Spiele are planning to release more bosses directly into the app later on, so even better.
Boss Fighters QR is a game that hits every single target it set out to hit, perfectly — and that’s rare to the point of almost not existing. If you haven’t read between the lines yet, I highly recommend it!
